L'Altrov'è sits on Via del Pratello — the long, narrow street west of the Piazza Maggiore that has been Bologna's counter-cultural axis since the 1970s. The bar has been a gay anchor on this street for over twenty years, operating in the easy, unselfconscious way that only long-established local venues achieve. The interior is small and warm, with vintage poster art and the accumulation of decades of memorabilia. The aperitivo hour (18:00–21:00) is a fixture for the neighbourhood — good selection of local wines and craft beers at reasonable prices, with a small free buffet. Later in the evening the bar fills with local regulars: artists, students, academics and professionals who have been coming here for years. Occasional drag shows on Saturdays. Monthly themed nights coordinate with Cassero's programme. There is no cover charge. The crowd is predominantly gay men and queer women, with the easy inclusivity that comes from genuine community rather than performed diversity. Via del Pratello is one of the most pleasant streets in Italy for an evening stroll; L'Altrov'è is the natural LGBT+ stop on that walk.
