Cape Town's gay retail scene is modest but covers the essentials. De Waterkant has a handful of shops selling pride merchandise and lifestyle items, and the broader city has shopping options for everything else you might need.
De Waterkant retail
The shops in and around Somerset Road and the immediate De Waterkant area stock what you would expect in a gay village: T-shirts, pride accessories, some adult items, and lifestyle gear. The scale is small — these are independent boutique operations, not multi-level stores. Opening hours tend to match bar district hours rather than standard retail, so do not count on them being open at 9am.
Some venues combine retail with other functions — a guesthouse with a small shop attached, or a bar that stocks some merchandise. The area is compact enough that a short walk covers everything on offer.
Beyond De Waterkant
Cape Town's V&A Waterfront mall has mainstream retail if you need clothing basics, electronics, or pharmacy items. The Biscuit Mill in Woodstock (about 10-15 minutes by Uber) has artisan markets on Saturdays with a strong design and lifestyle focus that draws a queer-friendly crowd. Long Street in the city centre has some interesting independent shops and second-hand stores, though exercise the usual caution about walking there after dark.
