Ankara is Turkey's capital and administrative centre — a planned city built to embody the secular nationalist project of the Turkish Republic. The LGBTQ+ scene is thin by the standards of Istanbul or Izmir, but the city is home to Kaos GL, one of Turkey's oldest and most important LGBTQ+ organisations (founded 1994), which has produced the country's most sustained queer journalism and advocacy. The social scene concentrates in the Kızılay and Çankaya districts. Ankara Pride was banned in 2017. The academic and diplomatic community — Ankara has a large university sector and a heavy diplomatic presence from its role as capital — provides a degree of international tolerance.
