Mykonos has a small but established gay bar scene, all of it in Mykonos Town. The streets are narrow. You'll get lost. That's fine; you won't wander far from the action. Little Venice and the area around it is where the evening begins. The clubs take over later.
Little Venice and the waterfront
Little Venice is on the western edge of Chora, where bars sit directly above the water. Tables hang over the sea. Sunset light is spectacular. The whole area fills up in the hour before dusk. Go early if you want a seat with a view. It's a crowded, good-natured scene, exactly what Mykonos is famous for.
Most bars here are mixed and gay-friendly rather than specifically gay. The gay bars are scattered through the winding streets nearby.
The bar circuit
Mykonos works as a circuit, not a single strip. People move between bars over an evening, fueled by expensive cocktails and the looseness of being on holiday. Nothing gets going before 10pm. The transition to clubs happens around midnight or later, with Pierro's the main late-night destination.
Expect to spend. A round of cocktails here costs what it does in London or Paris, sometimes more. This isn't a place to nurse one cheap beer all evening.
The bars
- At54 — This new gay dance club is where 'disco meets Mykonos'. At54 hosts weekly parties with glamorous crowds, hot DJs, and sexy bar staff. Look for flyers at Elia Beach. It's just a few steps from Taxi Square (aka Manto Square). Look 'uphill' away from the square; you'll see At54 on the first floor of the building, directly behind the square.
- Babylon — Gay bar Babylon is next to Jackie O’ along the old harbor's waterfront, near Paraportiani church and a gay cruising spot. The bar has both an indoor space and an outside terrace with lounge seating. If you sit next to the sea wall, be prepared for a bit of sea spray from the occasional waves. The bar gets busy around midnight, but arrive earlier for better seats. Babylon has a nightly show and themed parties.
- Elysium sunset bar — Elysium gay sunset bar is a Mykonos tradition, a good spot to watch the sun set over the ocean with a friend. The bar is on the terrace of the gay hotel Elysium and often has a small drag show after sundown. It's a good choice to start your night.
- JackieO' — JackieO' Bar Mykonos is right on the seawall of the old harbor, just below the famous church of Paraportiani. The motto here is ‘From sunset to sunrise in style‘. Expect friendly bartenders and staff. There's clean water on the beach, a swimming pool, lounge music all day, good food, and in the evening, happy hour with a drag queen.
- Kastro's Bar — This gay-popular bar has been around for 40 years. With island furnishings and a small balcony overlooking the sea, Kastro’s has an intimate, relaxed atmosphere for a drink or bite. It's a good spot for a date night. The food's good and the views are great. Get there for sunset. Grab a drink and walk down on the rocks for a romantic sunset. There's also a good view of the windmills.
- Lola — This lively cabaret music bar is hosted by Gilles and Dimitr. Lola attracts a mixed crowd who like the music, service, and extensive cocktail list. It's a good place for a cocktail to start your evening. Lola is a colorful gay-friendly lounge bar in Mykonos Town, a few minutes from Little Venice. Service is good, cocktails are good, and the music selection is superb.
- Montparnasse Piano Bar — Originally an art gallery in the late 1960s, it became a bar. Montparnasse (known as “The Piano Bar”) has live cabaret entertainment every night. Located in Little Venice, this friendly bar is also a favorite spot for watching the sunset and having cocktails on the balcony overlooking the sea. Popular with the gay crowd, but everyone is welcome.
- — One of the most popular clubs and late-night venues in Mykonos. It's a fun gay bar in the city center. There's some dancing. The party spills outside. Drinks were €10 during summer. During Xlsior, the bar was 100% gay men.
- Queen of Mykonos — Steps from the center of Chora, Queen of Mykonos is good for enjoying the local scene while sipping cocktails and snacking on appetizers. It's a pretty nice central bar in Mykonos town. Modern, cozy, with popular music, good for late-night entertainment. Cocktails are expensive. It's usually crowded. The inside space is small, but it has outdoor seating on a pedestrian road.
Practical notes
Everything in Mykonos costs more than you expect. Budget for it. The trade-off is that the setting is beautiful, and the crowd is international and relaxed.
There's no public transport here—it's a small Greek island. You walk. Chora is compact enough that you can cover the bar area on foot. For Super Paradise Beach, you'll need the water taxi or a boat.
