Club Zoo sits on the Schaafenstraße — Cologne's primary gay street — and serves as one of the anchors of the neighbourhood's social life. The street itself, running through the Altstadt-Süd district south of the Dom, has the highest concentration of gay bars, saunas, restaurants and shops in Cologne. Club Zoo's terrace is the Schaafenstraße's social living room: a place where the evening begins, where you meet before going somewhere else, where the circuit of the night is planned over the first drink. The crowd is mixed in the Cologne way — which means genuinely mixed, less stratified by sub-community than Berlin, more like a neighbourhood bar that happens to be gay. The bar is open daily and provides the basic infrastructure that any gay street needs: somewhere reliable, accessible, and without attitude. During CSD week, the entire Schaafenstraße becomes a continuous outdoor event and Club Zoo operates as one of the central social hubs.
