Frauenkneipe — literally "women's pub" — has been operating in Hamburg since 1977, making it the oldest lesbian bar in Germany and one of the oldest in Europe. The venue has maintained a women-only door policy throughout its history, providing a space that is primarily for lesbian and queer women but which has always reflected the complexity of what that means. The bar is a community institution rather than a nightlife venue: its function is social, political, and cultural as much as it is about drinking.
