Berkana Librería Gay on Calle de Hortaleza has been Chueca's bookshop and one of Madrid's most important cultural institutions since 1993 — Spain's oldest continuously operating LGBTQ+ bookshop. The shop stocks literature, history, theory, biography, fiction, and non-fiction across all LGBTQ+ themes and categories: queer theory in Spanish and translated editions, historical works on the AIDS crisis and the gay liberation movement, novels by gay and lesbian authors from Spain and internationally, trans memoirs and advocacy works, children's books with LGBTQ+ representation, and a wide-ranging general literature section with a consistent eye for queer relevance. Berkana has survived the digital disruption that has closed most specialist bookshops in Europe through a combination of community loyalty, curation quality, and the specific social function it serves — the shop is a community gathering point as well as a retail space, hosting readings, presentations, and discussions that bring writers and readers together in Chueca. For visitors interested in Spanish LGBTQ+ literature, history, and culture, Berkana is the place to begin.
