Auckland's hotel stock is concentrated in the CBD and waterfront area, with the main chains and larger properties located close to Viaduct Harbour and the city centre. K Road is a 10 to 15-minute walk from the CBD or a short bus or rideshare trip.

CBD and waterfront

Staying in Auckland's CBD gives access to the waterfront, the main shopping precincts, and easy reach of K Road. The CBD has hotels across all price points, from budget international chains to higher-end waterfront properties. The Viaduct Harbour area has a concentration of bars and restaurants at the water's edge and is popular for pre-dinner drinks before heading out.

K Road and Ponsonby

Smaller boutique accommodation exists on and around K Road itself and in the adjacent Ponsonby neighbourhood to the west. Ponsonby Road is one of Auckland's main dining and lifestyle strips, with good cafes and restaurants, and has a gay-friendly character — several venues there have LGBTQ+ followings. Staying in Ponsonby puts you in a residential neighbourhood with good independent hospitality, slightly removed from the CBD hotel cluster.

Cost

Auckland accommodation is expensive by regional standards, broadly comparable to Sydney. The city does not offer good value in the way that, say, a Southeast Asian or Eastern European city might. Budget at a level appropriate for a major Pacific city with high living costs. Pride Auckland weekend in late February or early March sees increased demand — book ahead.
