Galeria Café has been in Ipanema since the 1990s and is one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in Rio de Janeiro. The location — in the residential blocks behind Ipanema beach, close to the Posto 9 gay section — positions it as the natural after-beach destination for the LGBTQ+ crowd that spends its afternoons on the sand. The bar occupies a gallery-style space that has lent it its name; over the decades it has hosted art, performance, and the full spectrum of social events that a gay bar in a neighbourhood as culturally active as Ipanema naturally generates. The crowd reflects the neighbourhood: international visitors mixing with local regulars, gay men and women, older Cariocas who have been coming since the bar opened alongside younger visitors discovering it for the first time. The atmosphere is relaxed in the specifically Ipanema way — the city's beach culture bleeds into its bar culture, producing a social ease that makes evenings here feel like a continuation of the afternoon rather than the start of something new. Galeria Café is not the most spectacular venue in Rio's gay scene, but it is one of the most reliable and most representative of the neighbourhood's character.
