The Heretic has anchored the leather end of Atlanta's gay bar spectrum on Cheshire Bridge Road for decades — surviving the changes that have closed similar venues across the South by maintaining a consistent identity and serving a community that has few other dedicated spaces in the region. The bar operates as a leather and cruise venue: there is a darkroom, there are regular fetish-themed events, and the crowd is predominantly gay male, leather-identified, and looking for something specific that the neighbourhood video bars and nightclubs cannot provide. Monthly events cycle through bear nights, uniform nights, leather parties, and themed fetish evenings that draw regulars from across Atlanta and visiting leather travellers from across the South. The Cheshire Bridge Road location is Atlanta's equivalent of a leather district — a stretch of the city that has historically hosted adult entertainment venues, bathhouses, sex shops, and the bars that serve their clientele.
