Sauna 2000 on the Basler Straße — the road leading south towards Basel and the Swiss border — is Freiburg's gay sauna. The city's position near the Swiss and French borders gives the sauna a regional catchment that extends beyond Freiburg itself: gay men from Basel (45 minutes south), the Alsace, and the wider Breisgau region use the facility, which makes it busier than a population of 230,000 alone would sustain. The facilities are standard: Finnish sauna, steam room, darkrooms, rest area. The Basler Straße location is south of the Altstadt, accessible by tram. Themed evenings include bear nights.
