Two different bar scenes

If you picture a traditional gay bar strip, Schöneberg is probably what you are imagining. Motzstrasse and Fuggerstrasse near Nollendorfplatz have been a gay hub for decades. The bars here are neighbourhood places: mixed ages, regulars who know the staff by name, no particular dress code, and fairly reasonable prices. Most open late afternoon and wind down by 2 or 3am. It is a good place to start an evening or to drink without the pressure of a club atmosphere.

The Kreuzberg scene is different in almost every way. More underground, more political in the queer sense, and more likely to bleed into a club night as the hours progress. Several venues here have bar areas that turn into proper club spaces after midnight. The crowd skews younger and more international. Things do not really start until late — showing up before midnight often means you are the only person there.

What to expect in Schöneberg

The bars on and around Motzstrasse are walkable from each other. You can try five or six in a single evening without needing a taxi. Standouts include some of the oldest gay bars in Berlin, places that have been running since the 1970s and feel entirely comfortable with that history. There are also sports bars, leather bars with lower lighting, and a few places that run drag shows or themed nights midweek.

Late nights and clubs

Berlin bars that transition into club spaces are worth knowing about. Several venues in Kreuzberg and around the Ostbahnhof area start as bars and gradually shift as the night gets later. Admission is usually free or minimal before midnight, then a small cover charge applies after.

If you want to go further after the bars, the techno clubs operate on a completely different schedule. Many do not open until 2am and run through the weekend. Cash only at the door. Dress accordingly if Berghain is the destination.

A few practical notes

Berlin bars vary on payment. Schöneberg bars generally take cards now, though some smaller places still prefer cash for small amounts. Kreuzberg and club-adjacent spaces are more likely to be cash-only. A beer in Schöneberg typically runs €4–6. Cocktails and gin and tonics are in the €9–13 range depending on the bar.

Solo visitors are common and unremarkable. The scene is welcoming to people on their own. For the broader Berlin picture, see the Gay Berlin Guide.
