Vienna has a solid gay sauna scene with several established venues in and around the city centre. The options are not as numerous as in Berlin, but what exists is well-maintained, affordable by western European standards, and consistently busy.

What to expect

Viennese gay saunas run to the standard central European format: locker or private room option, wet and dry sauna areas, showers, steam room, and shared social spaces. Facilities at the established venues are kept to a reasonable standard. Staff are used to international visitors.

Pricing is reasonable. Entry for a locker session is typically in the 10-20 euro range. Private rooms cost more. Towels are usually included or available for a small supplement. Compared to London or Paris, the price point is noticeably lower.

Crowd and timing

Weekday afternoons draw the most consistent local crowd. Evenings are busier, particularly Thursday through Sunday. Vienna does not have the 24-hour sauna culture of Amsterdam or Berlin but most venues are open late. The crowd is predominantly local with international visitors more visible in summer and during Pride week.

The saunas

    • Apollo Sauna — Apollo Sauna has been in business for 25 years attracting mostly bears, butches, mature men and their admirers.
    • Kaiserbrundl — Best bathhouse restaurant in the world? Enter into one of the best restuarants before or after enjoying the baths.
    • Romersauna — Romersauna is a gay sauna in central Vienna with weekly themed events.
    • Sport Sauna — Sport Sauna is one of the most frequented by viennese gays. It offers saunas, steam bath, solarium, bar, movie-rooms and cruising areas.

Practical notes

Phones are not permitted inside, as is standard. Lockers handle valuables. Bring your own toiletries if you have preferences. Condoms are available at reception at any serious venue.

Getting there: most venues are accessible by U-Bahn within 20 minutes of the city centre. Check individual venue locations before you go — they are spread across different districts rather than concentrated in one area.
