L'Alchimiste is Strasbourg's most stylish gay-friendly bar, set in a medieval stone-vaulted cellar on Rue de la Douane near the cathedral. The bar's cocktail programme is seriously considered — a rotating seasonal menu with inventive Alsatian-inspired creations using local riesling and eau-de-vie — and the interior design (exposed stone, candlelight, copper accents) is a cut above the typical gay bar aesthetic. The crowd skews toward professionals and LGBTQ+-friendly rather than exclusively gay; it is the bar residents take out-of-town guests to. A DJ plays on Friday and Saturday evenings, generating a mellow pre-club atmosphere.
