Sabu occupies one of the most geographically unusual positions of any gay bar in Germany: directly on the Frauentormauer, the road that runs along the inside of Nuremberg's medieval city wall. The bar is physically adjacent to one of the fortifications of a 14th-century fortified city. This setting — a gay bar in the shadow of medieval walls, in one of Germany's most historically intact Altstädte — captures something essential about contemporary Nuremberg: the city's history is so dense that modernity and the medieval coexist without friction.
