Il Caffè Rosso — known universally in Venice as "Il Rosso" — sits in Campo Santa Margherita in the Dorsoduro sestiere: Venice's most democratic and least touristic campo, where the city's students, artists, professors and residents gather from morning through midnight. The bar has been consistently identified by Venice's LGBTQ+ community as the most welcoming mainstream venue in the city. It is not a gay bar in any formal sense; it is a neighbourhood bar that has always attracted a significant gay clientele alongside the broader Dorsoduro population. The campo itself is one of the more pleasant outdoor gathering places in Venice: large by Venetian standards, lined with cheap bars and restaurants, and extending into the evening with the informal social energy that makes this part of Dorsoduro feel more like a neighbourhood and less like a museum. Open from early morning for coffee through late night. Weekend evenings in summer the campo is full; arrive early for a table outside.
