The Bulldog is the most enduringly working-class gay pub in Brighton — a traditional boozer on St James's Street that has maintained its character through decades of gentrification that has transformed the surrounding area. The formula has not changed significantly: cheap drinks, a pool table, occasional drag nights, Sky Sports in the corner, and a crowd that is genuinely mixed across age and class in a way that distinguishes it from the more aspirational venues nearby. The Bulldog's clientele includes Kemptown residents who have been regulars for 20 or 30 years alongside students who have just arrived in the city. It is the pub that most accurately represents Brighton's LGBTQ+ community as it actually exists — a permanent resident community rather than a tourist destination.
