Cape Town's gay sauna scene is small but functional. The number of venues is limited compared to larger cities, but what exists is affordable and operates within reasonable distance of the De Waterkant gay village.
What to expect
Venues follow the standard sauna format: entry fee covers a locker or private room, use of communal facilities including steam and showers, and access to the social and cruising areas. Facilities vary by venue but the basics are consistent. Some have gym equipment, some have a lounge or bar area, some are more basic operations focused on the cruising aspect.
Prices are low by European standards. Entry fees run in the range of 100-200 rand, which is a fraction of what comparable venues charge in Germany or the UK. This makes Cape Town saunas accessible and worth visiting even if you are not primarily a sauna-goer at home.
Safety inside venues
Inside the venues themselves you are in a managed private environment with staff. The safety concerns that apply to walking around Cape Town at night do not apply inside. Standard sauna behaviour norms apply. Some venues have specific rules about phones or certain activities — check when you enter.

Practical notes
Towels are typically included. Condoms are available at most venues. Bring ID if you look young. Some venues are cash-only — check before going out.
Take Uber to and from venues rather than walking, particularly late at night. Cape Town's general crime environment means night-time walking in areas you do not know is a genuine risk.
