Woodward Bar at 3711 Woodward Avenue occupies a position in Detroit's revitalised Midtown neighbourhood that reflects the broader story of the city's post-2010 renaissance. Midtown Detroit — the neighbourhood surrounding Wayne State University, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Detroit Medical Center — has been the zone of most visible transformation in the city's revival, and the LGBTQ+ community has been part of that transformation. The bar draws the young, creative, and professional queer residents who have moved into the new apartments and converted lofts of Midtown, mixing with university students, artists, and the broader Midtown neighbourhood crowd. The Woodward Avenue location puts it on the Q Line streetcar corridor that connects Midtown to downtown, improving walkability and transit access in a city otherwise dependent on cars. The bar represents a different chapter of Detroit gay life than Menjo's or the Ferndale venues — newer, more visible in the city's mainstream geography, and oriented toward the Detroit that is being built rather than the Detroit that has always existed.
