Capital Pride is Washington DC's annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebration — one of the most politically significant Pride events in the world, held each June in the capital of the United States. The Capital Pride Parade runs along Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the same street as presidential inaugurations, connecting the United States Capitol at one end to the White House at the other. The symbolism is deliberate and powerful: the march for LGBTQ+ equality on the street of American political power, in the city where the laws that define the rights of every LGBTQ+ American are made. The event draws over 200,000 participants and spectators and includes a multi-day festival on the National Mall and adjacent areas, with performances, community organisations, and the full range of Washington's LGBTQ+ institutional infrastructure on display. Capital Pride has a specifically political character that distinguishes it from other major US Pride events: the organisations present are the ones that lobby Congress, file federal lawsuits, and run national advocacy campaigns. Politicians — including members of Congress — march in the parade. The HRC, the National LGBTQ Task Force, and dozens of national LGBTQ+ organisations use Pride week as a platform for legislative and policy advocacy. For visitors who want to experience both the celebratory and political dimensions of American LGBTQ+ life at their highest concentration, Capital Pride is the essential event.
