Split Pride is Croatia's second major LGBTQ+ Pride event — held annually in Split, the country's largest coastal city and the hub of Dalmatia. Split Pride has a more contested history than Zagreb Pride, with organised opposition from nationalist and Catholic groups in its earlier years, making its continued annual operation a statement of the Croatian LGBTQ+ community's determination to establish visibility across the country and not only in the capital. The Pride march proceeds through Split's city centre with police protection, and the event is accompanied by cultural and community programming that takes advantage of Split's remarkable setting — the ancient walls of Diocletian's Palace, the Riva waterfront promenade, and the unique atmosphere of a city that is both a living Croatian community and one of Europe's great tourist destinations. Split Pride draws participants from across Dalmatia and Croatia alongside international LGBTQ+ tourists who time their visit to coincide with the event.
