São Paulo has a wide hotel market and most reputable hotels in the central and upscale neighborhoods are welcoming to same-sex couples without issue. The city does not have a strong tradition of gay-specific guesthouses in the way that some European destinations do, but the overall hospitality industry is professional and discreet.

Where to stay

Consolação, the neighborhood that contains Frei Caneca, is the most practical base for proximity to the gay scene. Hotels here range from budget to mid-range. The area is central but not particularly scenic.

Jardins — the upscale residential district to the south of Consolação — is a better overall base if budget allows. It has excellent restaurants, Avenida Paulista nearby, and better infrastructure. Many of the city's better hotels are in this area.

Vila Madalena and Pinheiros are good alternatives for travelers who want a neighborhood feel and proximity to the alternative bar scene rather than the main gay circuit.

During Pride

June Pride brings enormous crowds to Avenida Paulista and the surrounding areas. Hotels fill up and prices increase. Book weeks or months in advance for Pride weekend. The weeks immediately before and after Pride are easier on availability and pricing.

Practical notes

São Paulo is not a cheap hotel market by South American standards, though it is still more affordable than comparable European cities. Breakfast is typically included at mid-range and upscale hotels. The city's traffic makes location more important than in cities where you can easily cross town — being close to where you want to spend your evenings matters.
