Accommodation in Gran Canaria for gay visitors means choosing between the Maspalomas resort area and Las Palmas city, and the choice shapes your entire experience of the island. Both areas have good options but they are fundamentally different types of stay.

Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés

The resort area around Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés has the most extensive range of explicitly gay and gay-friendly accommodation in Gran Canaria. Several hotels cater specifically to gay guests: clothing-optional pools, gay-only or heavily gay-skewed clientele, and proximity to the Yumbo Centre. These are largely sun-and-fun resort hotels rather than boutique properties, but they offer a specific atmosphere that gay visitors looking for a proper resort holiday value highly.

Standard resort hotels and apartments in the area range from budget self-catering apartments to mid-range all-inclusive properties. The quality is variable. For the explicitly gay options, look for hotels that are members of gay hospitality networks and that market directly to gay visitors; these tend to have the pool culture and social atmosphere that distinguishes them from ordinary resort properties.

Las Palmas

Las Palmas has city hotels and boutique accommodation in the historic Vegueta and Triana neighbourhoods. These are for visitors who want a city experience rather than a resort holiday. The accommodation is generally good value compared to mainland Spanish cities and considerably cheaper than Maspalomas resort hotels. The Triana neighbourhood in particular has some good mid-range boutique options in restored early 20th-century buildings.

When to book

Maspalomas Pride in May and the February-March Carnival Pride period are the two events that require the most advance booking. For the May Pride, six months to a year ahead is not excessive for the better gay-specific hotels, which sell out early. For winter visits outside of the festival weeks, booking two to three months ahead is usually adequate. January and February are popular with cold-weather refugees from northern Europe, so rooms fill up faster than the quiet period would suggest.

Practical notes

Maspalomas resort properties often include breakfast or can be booked all-inclusive; Las Palmas hotels are more likely to be room-only. The journey from Gran Canaria Airport to Maspalomas is about 20 minutes; to Las Palmas it is about 30-40 minutes. For the broader Gran Canaria picture, see the Gay Gran Canaria Guide.
