The Praia Mole Summer Festival is the informal name for the peak season celebration at Florianópolis's world-famous gay beach — a concentration of LGBTQ+ tourism, beach parties, and special events that transforms Praia Mole during the Brazilian summer months of December through February. The festival is less a single organized event than a season-long series of beach parties, DJ sets at the barracas (beach bars), special New Year celebrations, and the continuous social scene that makes Praia Mole one of South America's most celebrated gay beach destinations. January is the peak month: the beach fills with LGBTQ+ visitors from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, and Buenos Aires; the barracas run live music and DJ sets from late morning through sunset; and the beach's natural amphitheatre of granite headlands and Atlantic Forest creates one of the most spectacular settings for a gay summer event anywhere in the world. New Year's Eve (Reveillon) on Praia Mole is a special event in itself, with celebrations that continue through New Year's Day. Visitors planning to experience the Summer Festival should book accommodation months in advance — pousadas near Praia Mole sell out from August for the January peak — and should be prepared for the full intensity of a major Brazilian summer tourist destination.
