Frauenkneipe — literally "women's pub" — has been operating in Hamburg since 1977, making it the oldest lesbian bar in Germany and one of the oldest in Europe. The venue has maintained a women-only door policy throughout its history, providing a space that is primarily for lesbian and queer women but which has always reflected the complexity of what that means. The bar is a community institution rather than a nightlife venue: its function is social, political, and cultural as much as it is about drinking. Regular events include live music, political discussions, women's network evenings, film screenings and the annual Hamburg Dyke March gathering. The Altona location is slightly removed from the St Georg cluster but is accessible by S-Bahn and has its own neighbourhood character — Altona is one of Hamburg's most politically active and community-oriented districts. For lesbian and queer women visitors to Hamburg, Frauenkneipe is the essential stop: a living piece of feminist and lesbian cultural history that remains entirely functional and relevant.
