Gran Canaria has one of the best-developed gay sauna scenes of any European resort destination. The concentration of saunas in and around the Yumbo Centre in Maspalomas, combined with the island's year-round tourist traffic, means that facilities here are larger and better maintained than in most comparably sized European gay destinations.

Yumbo-area saunas

Several saunas operate within or immediately adjacent to the Yumbo Centre complex in Playa del Inglés. Their proximity to the bar scene means they function as part of a broader nightlife ecosystem rather than as standalone venues. Visitors move between bars and saunas across the evening and early morning hours in a way that would not be practical if the venues were spread across a city.

The saunas here are well-equipped by European standards: large steam rooms, dry saunas, pools or jacuzzis, extensive common areas, a range of private cabin options, and in some cases additional themed spaces. Entry prices reflect the resort environment — they are higher than mainland Spanish equivalents but competitive with Amsterdam or London. The client base is overwhelmingly international tourist.

Year-round operation

Unlike saunas in seasonal resort destinations that close in winter, Gran Canaria's saunas operate year-round and in many cases have their busiest periods in winter when the island draws visitors from cold northern climates. February, when Carnival Pride takes place, and May, during Maspalomas Pride, are the two busiest periods. Winter months (November through March) are consistently busy without the specific peaks of the festival weeks.

Practical notes

Most saunas here accept cards as well as cash. Towels and lockers are standard. The venues are generally well signed within and around the Yumbo complex. Opening hours are extensive — many open early afternoon and continue until 6am or later on weekends. For the broader Gran Canaria picture, see the Gay Gran Canaria Guide.
