Vancouver's gay bar scene runs along Davie Street in the West End, concentrated in the Davie Village strip between Burrard and Jervis. The scene is smaller than Toronto's Church and Wellesley but compact and walkable, with venues covering a reasonable range of formats across a six-block stretch.
The Davie Village strip
Davie Street is the spine. Most of the gay bars are within a few minutes walk of each other, which makes an evening out simple to organise. The street has a residential character alongside its commercial one — this is a neighbourhood where people live, not just a nightlife district activated on weekends. The result is that the bars operate in a context that feels embedded rather than isolated.
The West End's density and walkability mean that even if a particular bar is not exactly what you were looking for, another option is close by. On a busy Friday or Saturday night the street itself has energy beyond the individual venues.
What the scene covers
The Davie Village bars include a mix of neighbourhood pubs, dance venues, and spots with a more specific clientele. There are bear and leather events at various venues throughout the year. The drag scene is active — several bars run regular shows and the quality is generally solid.
The overall scale of the scene is smaller than what you would find in a city like San Francisco or Toronto. Vancouver has a smaller overall population and the gay scene reflects that. What it lacks in range it makes up for in concentration and the walkability of the strip.
Nights and timing
Thursday through Sunday are the live nights. Friday and Saturday are the main ones. Vancouver's bars operate under BC liquor licensing rules, which have become more flexible over recent years — last call is typically 2am or 3am depending on the venue's licence. Check individual venues for current hours as licensing conditions vary.
During Vancouver Pride week (late July / early August) the Davie Village bars operate at a different level of intensity, with street parties and extended hours programming. Book accommodation well in advance if visiting during Pride.

Practical notes
Prices in Davie Village bars reflect Vancouver's general cost level — expect to pay more than in Montreal or most Canadian cities outside Toronto. A beer runs 8 to 12 Canadian dollars in most venues.
The West End is safe and walkable at night. Davie Street itself is well-lit and active. Standard city awareness applies but the area does not present particular concerns.
