Miami's gay sauna scene is modest in size. The city is not primarily a sauna destination in the way that some European capitals are, but there are options in Miami proper and more options if you are willing to drive to Fort Lauderdale, where the scene is more developed. Fort Lauderdale is about 45 minutes north, traffic depending.

What to expect

The venues that operate in and around Miami follow the standard bathhouse format. You pay an entry fee that covers use of the facilities: steam room, dry sauna, showers, and common areas. Entry for a locker typically runs $20-30. A private room or cabin costs more, usually $30-45 depending on the venue and time of day. Weekday afternoons and weekend evenings are the busiest periods. There is no time limit on sessions.

The Miami scene tends to reflect the city's general body-conscious culture. The gym culture here is real and the people who use the saunas tend to be in good shape. This is not unique to Miami but it is more pronounced than in some other cities.

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has a well-regarded sauna scene centred in and around Wilton Manors, the gay neighbourhood north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. If you are making a trip to see the Fort Lauderdale gay area, combining it with a sauna visit is straightforward. The venues there tend to be larger and more established than the Miami options.

Practical notes

Bring ID. Most South Florida venues card at the door regardless of appearance. Towels are included in the entry fee at all established venues. Condoms and lube are available at dispensers or for purchase at reception. Some venues ask you to leave your phone in a locker at the entrance.

Entry prices are broadly in the $20-35 range, comparable to other US cities. The quality of facilities varies by venue.
