The Fruit at 305 S Roxboro Street functions as Durham's community-centred LGBTQ+ bar and event space — a venue with a more explicitly queer identity than the queer-friendly Pinhook, and a programming focus on community events, drag shows, and the social life of Durham's gay scene. The Roxboro Street location in central Durham places it near the restaurants, coffee shops, and independent businesses that give the city its progressive character. The Fruit has been an important part of Durham's efforts to build an LGBTQ+ venue that serves the full diversity of the community — including people of colour, trans and non-binary people, and queers who feel underserved by the more mainstream gay bar format.
