Sodade2 is the bar that defines the Athens gay scene. Occupying a rooftop terrace in the heart of Gazi, a few hundred metres from the converted gasworks that give the neighbourhood its name, Sodade2 has been the social anchor of Athens' LGBTQ+ community for over a decade and shows no signs of relinquishing that position. The experience on a summer evening is among the best gay bar experiences in southern Europe: warm Athenian air, the illuminated industrial towers of the former gasworks lit in changing colours, a distant view toward the Acropolis, and a crowd that is young, mixed, and genuinely happy to be there. The music programme moves between Greek pop, international commercial, and deeper electronic depending on the night and the DJ, but the rooftop atmosphere transcends the specifics of the music policy — people come for the combination of outdoor space, social ease, and the feeling that this is where Athens happens to be tonight. Sodade2 draws a mixed crowd of gay men, lesbians, trans guests, and straight friends who have worked out that Gazi is simply the best part of the city on a Friday or Saturday night. Arrive after 10pm; the terrace fills progressively and is at its best after midnight when the surrounding neighbourhood is also in full operation.
