The gay beach section at Playa del Inglés, running toward the famous Maspalomas sand dunes, is the most consistently busy gay beach in Europe outside the summer months — a distinction that reflects Gran Canaria's unique position as a year-round gay destination. While the gay beaches of Sitges, Ibiza, and Mykonos close with their respective summer seasons, this beach remains populated with gay and nudist sunbathers in January, February, and March, when Northern European gay men arrive specifically for the combination of reliable warm weather and established gay infrastructure. The Maspalomas sand dunes — a UNESCO-protected natural area of Saharan-scale sand formations that stretch behind the beach and meet the sea at the island's southern tip — provide one of the most dramatic natural backdrops of any gay beach in Europe.
