Axel Hotel Barcelona opened in 2003 and created the model that a generation of gay hotels around the world has since tried to replicate. The concept — a design hotel explicitly marketed to gay men (and welcoming to all) with a rooftop pool and sky bar that double as social hubs for the wider Gayxample community — was new at the time and remains one of the most successful ideas in LGBTQ+ hospitality. The hotel occupies a renovated Eixample building on Carrer d'Aribau, placing it in the centre of Gayxample, three minutes' walk from the Arena clubs and the Muntaner bar strip. The rooftop pool — the Axelbeach — is particularly famous: a genuinely good rooftop space with city views, a DJ programme in summer, and a crowd that includes hotel guests, local gay men with membership, and visitors to Barcelona who have made a reservation well in advance. Circuit Festival week in August makes the rooftop one of the most sought-after spaces in the city; access is limited and demand significantly exceeds supply. The rooms are designed to a consistent Axel aesthetic — dark, design-forward, high quality. The Sky Bar is a social space for the full range of the Gayxample community. Axel has since opened hotels in Madrid, Berlin, New York, Copenhagen, and other cities, but Barcelona remains the original and the reference point.
