Limanakia is the Athens gay beach — a sequence of rocky coves on the Vouliagmeni coast, approximately 25 kilometres south of the city centre and reachable in 25-30 minutes by the combination of Metro and bus. The beach has been the Athens gay daytime institution for decades: the rocky ledges and clear Aegean water attract a predominantly gay male crowd through the summer months, and the informal social conventions of the beach — where to lay out, where the most social sections are — are understood by locals and communicated quickly to first-timers. The water is exceptionally clear, the setting is naturally beautiful without the development that characterises resort beaches, and the combination of sun, sea, and sociability makes a Limanakia day one of the best aspects of an Athens summer visit. The nearby Vouliagmeni Lake, a saltwater lake of geothermal origin, provides an additional bathing option for those who want a break from the open sea. The bus route from the Glyfada area (reachable by Metro) serves Vouliagmeni; the journey from central Athens takes approximately 25-30 minutes by public transport. Go midweek in July and August for the most manageable crowd, or embrace the full social experience on a summer Saturday.
