Philly Pride is the annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebration of Philadelphia, anchored by a parade through the Gayborhood that has been held each June since 1972. The parade route passes through the heart of the neighbourhood — along 13th Street and through the streets bracketed by the city's iconic rainbow-coloured street signs, the only officially government-designated Gayborhood in the United States. The signs were installed in 2007 at the direction of the City of Philadelphia, replacing standard green street signs with rainbow-bordered versions on the blocks around 13th and Spruce Streets — a visible, permanent statement of municipal recognition that remains unique in America. The Pride events extend across a weekend, with a street festival, performances on multiple stages, vendor markets, and community organization presence. Philly Pride draws approximately 40,000 participants and spectators and has the character of a community celebration rather than a large commercial production — the neighbourhood scale of the Gayborhood, with its concentration of independently owned bars and organizations on walkable streets, gives the event an intimacy that larger city Prides cannot replicate. The William Way Center, Giovanni's Room, and the Gayborhood's bars all host their own Pride-weekend programming alongside the official parade.
