Chengdu has a well-established reputation as the most socially relaxed LGBTQ+ environment in mainland China. The Sichuan capital — known for its giant pandas, its spicy cuisine and its famously leisure-oriented culture — has a visible gay scene centred on the Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li area and the Kuanzhai Alley neighbourhood. The Chengdu scene is notably more open than Beijing or Shanghai: more visible LGBTQ+ spaces, a more openly gay-identified crowd, and a social atmosphere that many in the community describe as the most comfortable in the country.
