Florianópolis — known locally as Floripa — is the capital of Santa Catarina state and one of Brazil's most strikingly beautiful cities. Built on an island (the Ilha de Santa Catarina, nicknamed Ilha da Magia — Island of Magic) connected to the mainland by two bridges, Florianópolis offers 42 beaches, dramatic Atlantic Forest hills, lagoons, and a colonial Portuguese city centre. The city's LGBTQ+ scene is anchored by one world-famous attraction: Praia Mole, Brazil's most celebrated gay beach outside Rio de Janeiro and one of the most iconic gay beaches in South America. The beach sits between two granite headlands on the Atlantic-facing east coast of the island, with warm clear water, sand dunes, and a beach bar culture that makes it a summer destination not just for Florianopolitanos but for LGBTQ+ travellers from across Brazil and Argentina. The gay summer season runs from December through March, when Floripa's population more than doubles with tourists drawn by the beach lifestyle, the nightlife, and the extraordinary natural setting. Beyond Praia Mole, the city has a modest but genuine gay bar scene concentrated around the central neighbourhoods of Agronômica and Trindade, with bars and clubs that serve a year-round local community rather than purely the summer influx. Floripa Pride, held in October, draws approximately 100,000 people — one of the largest Pride events in southern Brazil. For visitors, the key months are December through February for beach and nightlife at maximum intensity, and October for Pride. The city's small-city scale contrasts with the international reputation of its gay beach — Floripa is no São Paulo, but Praia Mole has a global standing that makes this island city one of Brazil's essential LGBTQ+ destinations.
