Nautilus is located on Via Bara all'Olivella, a street of cultural significance: the Museo Archeologico Regionale is at one end, the Teatro Massimo (Sicily's magnificent 19th-century opera house) a short walk away. The bar is gay-friendly rather than exclusively gay — in the centro storico, where venue categories blur and social mixing is higher, an explicitly gay bar would face more social friction. Instead Nautilus operates as a welcoming mixed venue with a strongly LGBTQ+-positive atmosphere. The aperitivo is one of the best in the centro storico: Sicilian wines, local snacks, generous servings. Occasional queer arts and cultural events are hosted in coordination with local LGBTQ+ associations. The bar is open throughout the day, unusual for Palermo's nightlife-oriented venues, which makes it useful for afternoon meetings and early evening drinks.
