Rome's cruising scene covers indoor venues, outdoor parks, and the late-night bar scene in Testaccio. The indoor options through the saunas are the most reliable and most comfortable, but outdoor cruising has a long history in the city and two areas in particular are well established.

Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese, the large park in the north of the city above Piazza del Popolo, has had a cruising reputation for decades. The wooded sections toward the eastern and less-frequented parts of the park are where activity concentrates, particularly in the evenings. The park is enormous and most of it is an ordinary public space used by joggers and families during the day. The cruising happens in specific areas and is not the defining character of the park as a whole.

Standard precautions apply. Be aware of your surroundings, the police do pass through occasionally, and use judgement about timing and safety.

EUR district

EUR, the planned district in south Rome built under Mussolini, has a reputation for outdoor cruising, particularly around its lake and the less-trafficked green spaces in the area. It is further from the city centre than Villa Borghese and requires a metro or taxi to reach. Less visited by tourists, which gives it a more local character.

Indoor venues

The saunas handle the indoor cruising scene reliably. They are accessible, cheap by European standards, and function without the weather or police-related variables of outdoor spots. For most visitors, the saunas are the practical default.

The Testaccio late-night bar scene also functions as a social meeting point that shades into cruising for some people. This is more social than explicit — the line between the two is loose in a busy 3am crowd.

The venues

Practical notes

Outdoor locations carry their own risks and the usual advice applies: be aware of who else is around, trust your instincts, and do not leave valuables visible. Indoor venues have their own conduct codes that are worth respecting — staff will tell you if something is not acceptable.
