Valencia has a good range of accommodation options at prices that undercut Madrid and Barcelona by a meaningful margin. The city receives fewer international tourists than either of those cities, which keeps hotel prices more competitive and means you are less likely to find your preferred option sold out unless you are visiting during Las Fallas or Pride week.
Where to stay
For gay visitors who want to be close to the Ruzafa scene, staying in the Ruzafa neighbourhood or the adjacent Eixample district makes the most sense. You can walk to most of the gay bars and restaurants without needing transport, and the neighbourhood has its own good selection of general restaurants and cafes for daytime use.
The city centre, around the historic old town and the Cathedral, is also a good base. It is a short taxi or bus ride to Ruzafa and gives you immediate access to Valencia's main architectural sights. Hotel options in the centre are more plentiful and range from budget to mid-range to a few higher-end properties.
The beach area around La Malvarrosa is a third option for summer visits when beach access is a priority. It is further from Ruzafa (about 30 minutes by public transport at night) but the beachside hotels and apartments tend to be reasonably priced.
Gay-specific and gay-friendly options
Valencia does not have the concentration of dedicated gay guesthouses that Sitges offers. Most accommodation in the city is gay-friendly in a passive rather than active sense — which is to say you will not encounter problems, but you are unlikely to find the kind of explicitly gay-run guesthouse with a pool and a specifically LGBTQ+ atmosphere that Sitges specialises in. The city's more cosmopolitan mid-range hotels in Ruzafa and the Eixample are the closest equivalent.
Las Fallas and Pride: booking windows
During Las Fallas (mid-March, typically the week ending on 19 March) accommodation prices rise sharply and availability drops. The city receives a very large influx of domestic Spanish tourists for the festival. Book at least three months ahead for this period, ideally more. During Pride week in June, the Ruzafa area in particular fills up; booking a month to six weeks ahead is usually sufficient outside of the hotel district immediately surrounding the Pride events.
