Menjo's Complex at 928 W McNichols Road is one of the oldest continuously operating gay clubs in Michigan and one of the defining institutions of Detroit's LGBTQ+ scene. Open since 1979, Menjo's has outlasted economic recessions, the AIDS crisis, the bankruptcy of the city that surrounds it, and every shift in nightlife fashion over four decades. The venue's location in the Palmer Park area of northwest Detroit — near the historic 296-acre park that has long been a gathering point for Detroit's gay community — gives it a deep rootedness in the geography of the city's queer life. The complex format has evolved over the years: multiple bar areas, dance floors, and themed event spaces allow Menjo's to accommodate different programming and different crowds simultaneously. The Thursday through Sunday operation follows the rhythm of a venue that knows its regulars. For visitors to Detroit who want to experience the city's gay nightlife as it actually exists — not as a polished tourist product but as a living community institution — Menjo's is the essential stop. Forty-five years of community history is written into the walls.
