Amsterdam Bar occupies a Central Avenue storefront in downtown Phoenix and has built its reputation on genuine inclusivity — in a bar scene that, like most American gay bar scenes, skews heavily toward gay men, Amsterdam has consistently been a place where lesbians, bisexual people, trans and non-binary people, and the full breadth of the LGBTQ+ community feel comfortable and welcome. This is harder to achieve than it sounds, and Amsterdam does it through deliberate programming choices and a staff culture that reflects the bar's stated values. The downtown location puts it close to the light rail and in a part of Phoenix that has been undergoing significant redevelopment — more residential, more walkable, and more culturally diverse than the Midtown corridor. The bar itself is unpretentious: a good local bar with a welcoming atmosphere rather than a destination venue with a carefully cultivated aesthetic. Regular events include lesbian nights, queer women's events, and the cross-community programming that reflects the bar's genuinely inclusive ethos. The Amsterdam draws both the local downtown LGBTQ+ population and visitors who have been pointed here by a community that appreciates what it represents.
