Fort Lauderdale's gay bar scene is almost entirely located on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. The Drive is about a mile long and dense with venues — bars, clubs, restaurants, and shops running almost end to end. If you stand at one end of Wilton Drive on a Friday night and start walking, you will pass ten or more gay venues before you reach the other end. For a city of this size, that density is remarkable.

The scene covers a wide range. There are sports bars, leather bars, bears bars, dance bars, drag venues, and quiet cocktail places. The crowd on weekends is mixed in age and type — locals from Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale alongside visitors from Miami, the northeast, and internationally. The bars are generally not segregated by scene type the way a larger city might be. The leather crowd and the circuit crowd and the older local regulars are all within a few hundred meters of each other.

The Bars

    • DrYnk Bar and Lounge — Nice bar & lounge check out the back patio is so nice and cute
    • LeBoy — LeBoy has a very fun atmosphere, the drinks are amazing and Ricky is one of my favorite bartenders. He always knows how to get everyone pumped with energy. Also been hearing that patrons are getting stopped at the door for not being skinny enough. That’s not true. I’m 237 lbs & I’ve never been told I can’t have a drink. I’m sure if I was to try & apply to be a dancer they’d turn me down. It’s a strip club.
    • Ramrod Fort Lauderdale — Fun place for men who enjoy a relaxed environment. Bartender could be a little more friendly, but they are also slammed all the time. Great speed on getting drinks in your hand. Music is also energetic and pulsing. Most of guys have no attitude or ego, and there is someone for everyone. Definitely one of my go-to places every time I am visiting the area.
    • Smarty Pants — always have a good time here when visiting. Great neighborhood bar. Fritz is a great host.

Leather and Bear Scene

The leather and bear community is disproportionately strong in Fort Lauderdale compared to most similarly-sized US cities. This shows up in the bar offerings: several venues specifically program leather and bear nights, and the gear shops along the Drive supply a serious rather than novelty customer base. The Leather and Fetish Weekend, typically held in autumn, is one of the larger leather events in the South and draws a national crowd. If this is your community, the Fort Lauderdale scene delivers in a way that, say, Orlando or Tampa do not.

When to Go

The Drive fills properly on Friday and Saturday nights starting around 9pm. Sunday afternoons have a relaxed, local feel at several bars. Weeknights are quieter but not dead — the permanent resident population of Wilton Manors means there is always some foot traffic, even midweek.

During Fort Lauderdale Pride (February) and the Leather Weekend (autumn), the Drive gets genuinely packed. Bar-hopping becomes slow going because crowds spill onto the sidewalk. If you want a quieter experience, come on a Tuesday in January and you will find the regulars at the bar without fighting for space.

Practical Notes

Most bars on Wilton Drive do not charge cover. Some venues run specific themed nights with a small cover. Drinks range from $8 to $14 for a cocktail. The older-school bars tend to be cheaper; the newer ones price accordingly. Tipping is standard — $1-2 per drink minimum.

Parking on Wilton Drive fills on busy nights. The Hagen Ranch Road parking area off the Drive is often the overflow. Ridesharing to the Drive from anywhere in Fort Lauderdale or the beach is straightforward and eliminates the parking problem.
