Mexico City has one of Latin America's largest and most established gay bar scenes, centered on Zona Rosa but extending into Roma and other neighborhoods. The range covers everything from dive bars playing old pop to slick multi-floor clubs with international DJs. Prices are low by European or North American standards.

Zona Rosa

Amberes and Londres streets in Zona Rosa carry the highest concentration of gay venues. On weekends, particularly Friday and Saturday nights, these streets fill up and the energy is palpable. The bars stay open late, the music is loud, and the crowd is mixed in age and origin. Some venues have terraces that spill onto the pavement; others are tighter, darker indoor spaces.

The scene in Zona Rosa is commercial and tourist-friendly without being hollow. There are real regulars here alongside visitors, and the prices make extended evenings manageable. A beer costs a fraction of what it does in comparable European venues.

Colonia Roma

Roma Norte has a different register — more cocktail bars, more mixed-use spaces, more of the demographic that has moved into the neighborhood as it gentrified. The gay and gay-friendly bars here tend to be smaller and more curated. They attract a younger, more design-conscious crowd and are less likely to be running pop anthems at high volume all night.

Roma is worth exploring if you want something more varied than the Zona Rosa circuit, or if you are based in the neighborhood and want to start an evening locally before heading to Zona Rosa later.

Timing

Mexico City nightlife runs late. Bars are quiet before 10pm and the clubs do not fill until after midnight. For a full night out, plan to start later than you would in a northern European city. The payoff is that the scene keeps going until the early hours.

Practical notes

Cover charges exist at some of the larger clubs, typically including a drink. Smaller bars are often free entry. Drinks are cheap. The altitude (2,240m) means alcohol hits differently — pace yourself, especially early in your stay.
