Shopping is a significant part of the Provincetown experience in a way that is not true of most gay destinations. Commercial Street is lined with shops for its entire length, and browsing them is a normal part of spending time in the town. The mix covers art galleries, gift shops, clothing, pride merchandise, books, and food. It is not a shopping destination in the sense of a retail district; it is more that the town's main social street happens to have a lot of interesting things to look at and buy.
Art galleries
Provincetown has a long history as an artists' colony, predating its gay identity. The town attracted painters and writers from the early 20th century, and that tradition continues. There are more galleries per capita than in almost any comparable small town in the US. The work ranges from representational painting and photography to contemporary pieces. Many galleries are gay-owned or prominently feature LGBTQ+ artists. If you have any interest in art, the gallery scene alone is worth several hours of wandering.
Pride merchandise and LGBTQ+ retail
Commercial Street has a reliable supply of pride merchandise: flags, t-shirts, accessories, and general rainbow-branded items. Some shops specialise in this; others carry it alongside other stock. The selection is better than you find in most cities because the market is so specifically gay. Adult shops with gear and erotic merchandise also operate in the town, catering to the community without being hidden away.
Books
Provincetown has at least one independent bookshop with a strong LGBTQ+ section, which is notable for a town of this size. The selection of gay and queer literature, both fiction and non-fiction, is better here than in many larger cities. If you are looking for specific titles or just browsing, it is worth stopping in.
General retail
Beyond the above, Commercial Street has clothing boutiques, jewellery shops, food and candy stores, and the usual resort-town souvenir shops. The quality varies from genuinely interesting independent retailers to standard tourist merchandise. The street is long enough that selective browsing is the practical approach.

Practical notes
Cash is useful, as some smaller shops prefer it. Most galleries and larger shops take cards without issue. Hours vary seasonally; some shops are summer-only and close after Columbus Day. For the broader Provincetown picture, see the Gay Provincetown Guide.
