Quebec City's hotel inventory is heavily concentrated in and around the Old Town, particularly in the upper town near Chateau Frontenac and along Grande-Allee. Staying in Saint-Roch, the gay-friendly lower-town neighbourhood, is an option but the hotel supply there is smaller.

Old Town hotels

The Old Town hotels offer the most obvious tourist infrastructure: proximity to the historic sites, the Frontenac, the Plains of Abraham, and the wall. They are the default choice for first-time visitors who want to be in the heart of the historic city. The upper town is walkable and the views from this part of the city are the best Quebec City has to offer.

From the Old Town to Saint-Roch is a walk down the hill — manageable in either direction but the upward journey at the end of the night is noticeable. The funiculaire near the Chateau Frontenac connects upper and lower town and costs a small fare.

Saint-Roch accommodation

Saint-Roch has a smaller but growing boutique accommodation scene. Staying here puts you in the gay-friendly neighbourhood, within walking distance of the bars on Rue Saint-Joseph Est, and in a neighbourhood with excellent restaurants and coffee shops. The area is less touristic and more residential than the Old Town, which some visitors prefer.

Cost

Quebec City accommodation is significantly cheaper than Montreal. This is a meaningful difference — a mid-range hotel in Quebec City will typically cost less than a comparable hotel in Montreal, and the difference is not marginal. For visitors prioritising budget, Quebec City is a good value Canadian destination.

Practical notes

    • Best base: Old Town for the historic experience; Saint-Roch for proximity to the gay-friendly scene and a more local neighbourhood feel.
    • Winter Carnival: Held in January/February, the city fills and rates rise. Book far ahead if visiting then.
    • Summer: July and August are busy. The Old Town particularly fills with tourists.
    • Value: Noticeably cheaper than Montreal. Good value for a Canadian city.
