Oxford Street has always had a retail side to its gay identity. The stretch through Darlinghurst and Paddington includes sex shops, fetish gear stores, and general LGBTQ+ lifestyle retail. It is not as dense as it was in the 1990s, when the whole strip was more commercially concentrated, but there is still a workable selection on and just off the main street.
Oxford Street retail
The shops clustered around Taylor Square and the Darlinghurst section of Oxford Street cover the basics: adult stores with toys and gear, fetish and leather shops, and a few places selling pride merchandise and general queer lifestyle products. Most are open from around 10am through to 9pm or later, with some staying open past midnight on weekends.
The mix has shifted over time. Some of the long-running specialist fetish shops have closed as their customers shifted to buying online. What remains tends to be either the adult shops that benefit from foot traffic, or the more specialist leather and gear stores that still have a reason to exist as physical spaces where you can see and handle the product.
Books
LGBTQ+ specialist bookshops have come and gone in Sydney over the years. The general move to online retail has thinned the market. Newtown has several good independent bookshops that tend to carry a solid queer section without being exclusively LGBTQ+ focused. Worth browsing if you are in the area.

Practical notes
If you are looking for something specific in fetish or leather gear, it is worth checking stock and hours by phone or social media before making a special trip. The specialist shops can have irregular hours or limited stock of specific items.
