Wellington's cruising scene is limited by the city's small size and its frequently inhospitable weather. Outdoor options that exist in theory are often impractical due to wind and rain. The indoor sauna circuit, such as it is, provides the most consistent option.

Indoor options

Wellington's gay saunas are limited — see the Wellington gay saunas guide for current venues. The small number of venues means indoor cruising options are not a developed circuit but a handful of spots that serve the local demand.

Outdoor locations

Wellington's parks and reserves carry reputations in this context, though the wind and rain that characterise the city for much of the year make outdoor activity less reliable than in warmer cities. Aro Valley and the Town Belt — the green belt running along the hills above the inner suburbs — have sections with historical reputations. The Town Belt is a large forested reserve accessible from several points in the inner city and suburbs.

Summer (December to February) is the practical outdoor season. Outside of these months the wind and cold make extended outdoor time uncomfortable. Wellington's outdoor cruising scene is consequently more seasonal and weather-dependent than in Auckland or Australian cities.

Standard public space precautions apply throughout.

Practical notes

Wellington's weather is the primary variable for outdoor activity. The same park that is pleasant on a warm summer evening can be cold, dark, and very windy on a Tuesday in July. Indoor options remove the weather variable entirely. For anyone visiting outside the summer months, indoor venues are the practical focus.

Auckland, a short flight north, has a more developed indoor and outdoor cruising infrastructure if a fuller range of options is the priority.
