Posto 9 is one of the most famous LGBTQ+ public spaces in the world — the section of Ipanema beach designated by decades of social convention as the gay gathering point of Rio de Janeiro. The postos are the numbered lifeguard stations that divide Rio's southern beaches into informal zones, each with its own social character; Posto 9, at the end of Rua Vinícius de Moraes, has been the LGBTQ+ section since the 1970s. What began as an informal arrangement — gay men finding safety and community in a stretch of sand away from more hostile social environments — has solidified over five decades into one of the most established and visible LGBTQ+ public spaces in the world. The social culture of Posto 9 is the culture of Brazilian beach life applied to the LGBTQ+ community: the hawkers selling mate tea, grilled cheese, and cold beer move through the crowd; the game of altinha (a keepie-uppie variant played in the shallows) draws a circle of players; the music from phone speakers and the conversations of dozens of groups overlap in the specific ambient sound of a Rio beach. The bodies are beautiful — Ipanema beach culture has an aesthetic standard that is explicit and unashamed — and the social codes are relaxed in the way of a community that has successfully claimed a public space as its own over generations. The backdrop is cinematic: the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) mountains rise directly behind the Vidigal hillside at the western end of the beach, and on a clear day the contrast of ocean blue, white sand, and dark green mountain is the visual essence of Rio de Janeiro. Sunset at Posto 9 — the light changing behind the mountains, the crowd beginning to drift toward the beach bars and restaurants of Farme de Amoedo — is one of the great daily rituals of LGBTQ+ travel anywhere in the world. Year-round warmth means the beach is viable in every month, though the southern hemisphere summer from December to March brings the highest temperatures and the largest crowds.
