Chicago's gay cruising options split between well-established indoor venues and a handful of outdoor areas that have been part of the city's gay geography for decades. The indoor sauna and cruising venues near Boystown handle most of the organised scene. Outdoor spots exist but are less formalised.
Indoor venues
The saunas and dedicated cruising venues near Boystown are the most reliable option. They are established, have regular hours, and know their clientele. Entry fees run around $20-50 depending on the venue and whether you want a locker or a cabin. Most operate from early afternoon onward, with weekday afternoons drawing a regular crowd and weekend evenings being busier.
Chicago's IML connection means that around Memorial Day weekend, the indoor scene gets significantly busier with visiting leather community members. Some venues run specific events or extended hours during IML week.
Montrose Beach
Montrose Beach on Lake Michigan has been the gay beach in Chicago for many years. The northern section of the beach is where the gay crowd congregates, particularly on warm summer weekends. The "Belmont Rocks" tradition goes back decades -- the actual rocks that used to form a popular cruising and socialising spot at the lakefront were removed in the early 2000s during a park renovation, but the beach area remains a well-known gathering point. On a hot July weekend, the crowd is large.
Montrose Beach works better as a social scene than as active cruising in daylight. The area around the dunes at the north end of the beach is where things have historically been more active, but this varies by time of day and season. The beach is a city park and public; act accordingly.
Grant Park area
The lakefront parkland around Grant Park and further south has historically seen cruising activity, particularly in wooded or less-trafficked sections. This is more variable and less reliable than the beach or indoor venues, and the areas involved are public parks with regular foot traffic from cyclists, joggers, and families. Discretion is the operating principle.
Practical notes
Indoor venues are straightforward: pay entry, follow the rules, be considerate. For outdoor spots, remember you are in a public space. The lakefront trails are very heavily used in summer. Carry what you need and be aware of your surroundings.
