Bar X is Dortmund's clearest dedicated gay bar — a venue on the Brüderweg that makes no pretensions to anything other than being a good gay bar in a working-class city that values authenticity over presentation. The Brüderweg is Dortmund's closest equivalent to a gay street: a short stretch near the city centre that has concentrated the city's LGBTQ+ bars for decades. The bar's character is entirely consistent with its city: Dortmund has historically been one of Germany's major working-class industrial cities, shaped by coal, steel and the Ruhr's collective identity, and Bar X reflects that heritage in its no-nonsense approach to hospitality. The regulars are loyal, the staff know the community, and visiting gay travellers are welcomed without fuss. Regular events include queer quiz nights and drag performances that are modest in scale but warmly attended. The crowd spans ages — the gay community in a city the size of Dortmund tends toward integration rather than generational segregation — and the atmosphere is social and community-oriented rather than cruisy or competitive. The Brüderweg location is a 15-minute walk from the main station.
